Being a stylist sounds like the greatest job in the history of jobs (except possibly being a food critic). We had a chat to Aussie Hollywood stylist Sophia Banks Coloma to find out what the life of a stylist is like! The lovely Sophia did a fantastic job styling four cast members from The Hunger Games for all their various premieres and outings, is currently in talks for a *spoiler alert* TV show and somehow manages to find the time to co-design for her own line, Whitley Kros. As well as this, she also wears amazing shoes.
FM: When did you realise you wanted a career in fashion?
Sophia: I think at about 11 when I asked my mum to take me to fashion drawing classes . And I used to love reading Vogue Bambini and making outfits, which were far beyond a normal teenager - plaid shorts , with cool long socks and brocades. It was either that or acting which I also did for a while but in the end fashion won my heart.
FM: How did you kick start your career?
Sophia: I actually did a UTS degree in business first as I thought it would be a good foundation and it was really allowed me to run my business and also when I am consulting to fashion brands I really understand the business side. I have owned a store, have a fashion label, can sew , styled and costume design film. I did start a masters in fine art majoring in fashion design but it has had to been put on hold as I have got so busy.
FM: What is the average day like for a Hollywood stylist like you?
Sophia: It is very crazy, long days. Some days I am in the office preparing moodboards and working on request. A lot of days I am pulling looks from showrooms and fittings . Most clients come to me, but I also have clients that get paparazzi a lot so we do shopping and I do a monthly closet for them, where I set out clothes for them for the entire month for everyday .
Then there are the photoshoots which are amazing and in all locations- last week I did a Kate Nash music video and found myself at a rundown circus.
FM: How crazy do things get around those big events like the Oscars?
Sophia: Soooo crazy . Award season is madness and I have to start preparing in November or December; there are so many awards shows. This year I had 9 people attending the Oscars and/or parties.
And a week later hunger games premiere with 4 cast members and the night of the premiere I went from the red carpet to a Qantas plane and flew to Sydney ... needless to say it was intense.
FM: The people you styled from The Hunger Games looked AMAZING at the premiere! Talk us through their outfits.
Sophia: Jacqueline emerson- wore beautiful Reem Acra, amazing Van Clef Arples- notice the necklace is like a mocking jay .
Amandla Steinberg- we did a vintage Collette Dinnigan:</span></span>
Willow Shields- I contacted Marc Jacobs and we decided he would love to dress her and we have been working with him ever since when dressing her.</span></span>
Dayo- we went with Calvin Klein suit and Esquivel shoes.</span></span>
FM: Which other celebrities have you worked with?
Sophia: Maggie Grace, Sharon Stone, Alicia SiIlverstone, Michelle Rodriguez, Hannah Simone (New Girl), Kirsty Alley, Christa B Allen (Revenge), Ali Cobrin (American Pie), Kirsten Chenoweth, MArisol Nichols and Jennifer Aspen (all from GCB), Jennifer Stone (Wizards of Waverly Place), Shay Mitchell (Pretty little Liars), Kelsey Chow (Spider Man), Dominki Garcia (Star City), Katie Le Clerc (Life Unexpected), Erica Christensen, Laura Vandervoort, Jessie Metcalfe, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Jennifer Beals, Jessica Gomes (Sports illustarted model), Jessica Mcnamee (The Vow), Sharni Vinson (Step Up 3d), Nicki Wheelan, Brooke Burns, Kelly Preston, Arielle Kebbel (90120), Melissa Rauch (Big Bang Theory).
<span>FM: I understand that you love using Aussie designers! Who are your favourites?
Sophia: I love supporting Aussie designers, right now I am about to head to fashion week to find more dresses for the red carpet. I also work with a few labels consulting them and styling . I love a lot - Josh Goot, Collette Dinnigan.</span>
FM: Honestly, watching the Rachel Zoe Project makes me feel stressed out! Is being a stylist actually like that?
Sophia: Yes, it is stressful as there is so much pressure with the red carpet and to find that dress that makes a moment.
FM: Would you ever want a reality TV show?
Sophia: I am in talks right now for a show.
HOW EXCITING! We can't wait for Sophia to have her own show! In the mean time, check out some more of the fantastic styling work she's done below:
Of course, Sophia has like, a million famous clients, but out of all of them, our favourite would have to be Amandla Stenberg because she is just so cute! She plays little Rue in The Hunger Games and to be honest, I was rooting for her to win!
She is just so pretty and tiny!
I'm sure the fantastic Sophia is pleased that her tiniest client is able to look just as amazing as everyone else! We can't wait to hear more from this talented Aussie stylist and have our fingers crossed that she'll get her on TV show!
